School Marketing Design for Enrollment Growth

A school hires an agency to run its ads. The agency does its job. Clicks come in at a fair price. Then the families land on a viewbook designed in Word, an open house postcard with a clip-art mascot, and a website header that has not changed since 2014. The campaign was fine. The design was the problem.
I have watched that happen at dozens of schools, and it is why we built our school marketing design service the way we did. We design the creative that every channel needs. Another team, or one of the school enrollment marketing agencies we compared, runs the channels.
This post explains what that covers, what it costs, and how to decide whether you need us, a full-service agency, or both.

Data: 41% of parents who searched for a school used school websites, 43% visited in person, and safety is now the number one reason private and charter parents choose a school. Sources for all of it are on our School Branding & Enrollment Statistics 2026 page.
What school marketing design covers
Marketing design is everything a family sees. The agency running your ads decides who sees it and when. We decide what it looks like and what it says. Five channels, five sets of deliverables.
Enrollment-focused creative campaigns
A campaign is one idea carried across every channel for one enrollment window. Open house season. Application deadline. Kindergarten roundup. New program launch.
What we design: the campaign concept and headline, the visual system for it (color, type, photography direction), and the master layouts every other piece follows. One idea, so a family who sees your Instagram ad on Tuesday recognizes your postcard on Thursday.
What goes wrong without it: every channel gets its own look, the school reads as 3 different schools, and nothing builds on anything.
Digital advertising for schools
Google, Meta, YouTube, and streaming ads work when the creative stops the scroll and the landing page keeps the promise.
What we design: ad sets in every size the platform needs (square, story, landscape, display), 3 to 5 headline and image variations so your agency can test, and the landing page design the ad points to. Files delivered in the formats your ads team asks for.
What goes wrong without it: agencies build ads from stock photos and your old logo because that is what they were given. Cost per inquiry climbs and nobody can say why.
School email marketing
Email is the cheapest channel a school owns and usually the ugliest.
What we design: a branded email template set for your platform (newsletter, event invite, deadline reminder, welcome sequence), header and footer artwork, and a layout system your office can reuse without a designer. We also design the inquiry nurture sequence, the 4 to 6 emails a family gets between inquiry and tour.
What goes wrong without it: every email is a wall of text under a stretched logo, open rates are fine, and nobody clicks.
School social media marketing
Organic social is where current families see you every day and prospective families check whether you are real.
What we design: a template set for the posts a school actually makes (events, student spotlights, staff, sports, announcements), story and reel frames, profile and cover art, and a simple guide so whoever posts keeps it consistent.
What goes wrong without it: the feed is screenshots of flyers. It looks like a school that does not care, which is the one message you cannot afford.
Website and enrollment materials design
The website is where 41% of searching parents go, and print is what they take home from the tour.
What we design: the enrollment section of your site (admissions landing page, tour booking page, program pages) as design files your web team builds from, plus the print set: viewbook, one-page fact sheet, open house postcard, welcome packet, yard signs, and banners. Everything in one visual system.
What goes wrong without it: the website and the viewbook disagree, and the family notices before you do.
Why the design layer decides whether campaigns convert
Enrollment is a funnel with a lot of steps, and design touches every one.
The median NAIS independent school turns 385 inquiries into 180 applications, 113 acceptances, and 79 enrolled students. Every drop between those numbers is a family who looked at something and decided no. Most of what they looked at was designed by someone.
Parents rank safety and the quality of teachers and staff as the top reasons they choose a school. You cannot put safety in an ad headline and have it land. You show it: real photos of your real campus, a clean site that loads and answers questions, a viewbook that looks like the school takes care of things. Design carries the claim.
An agency measuring cost per click will optimize the click. Cost per enrolled student depends on what happens after the click, and that is design.
How we work
We have designed for 250+ schools since 2010, about half of them mascot and identity projects and the rest campaigns and materials. The process is the same every time.
- Scoping call. 30 minutes. What window you are marketing for, which channels are running, who runs them, and what you have now.
- Written proposal, fixed price. Enrollment marketing does not come in a fixed tier because the scope changes with the campaign and the season. You get a written scope and a fixed price before any work starts. No hourly billing.
- Brand check. If your identity is not settled, we fix that first, because every campaign piece inherits it. Our visual identity packages are published, and a typical mascot logo project runs $1,500 to $3,000 and 2 to 4 weeks.
- Campaign kit. Concept, master layouts, then the channel deliverables above, in the order your calendar needs them.
- Handoff. Files in the formats your ads team, email platform, web team, and printer each need, plus the templates your office keeps using after we are gone.
We accept school purchase orders. Most projects run 4 to 8 weeks from scoping call to final files, depending on how many channels are in scope.
How we work with the agency running your channels
We do not run your ads, send your emails, manage your social accounts, or build your website. Plenty of good agencies do, and the comparison we published names 12 of them with what each one covers.
What we do is hand them finished creative. In practice that means:
- Your ads agency gets sized ad sets and a landing page design instead of a logo file and a request to “make something”.
- Your email platform gets a template that matches the ads.
- Your web team gets page designs, not a mood board.
- Your printer gets press-ready files.
Schools that pair a design partner with a channel agency usually get better numbers from the same media budget, because the agency stops spending time on creative it is not built for. Ask your agency whether they would rather receive finished creative. Most say yes before you finish the question.
What it costs
We do not publish a price list for marketing design because a one-postcard job and a five-channel campaign kit are not the same product. What we can tell you:
- Every project is a fixed price in writing after one scoping call.
- Identity work, which most campaign work sits on, has published packages.
- A small campaign kit for one enrollment window is a fraction of a typical year of agency media spend. A district-wide rebrand with campaign templates is a bigger project, and we say so up front.
For context, district branding contracts reported in the news since 2022 run $75,000 to $200,000 for the design work alone. Most schools we work with spend far less because they need a campaign kit, not a rebrand.
Five questions to ask before you hire anyone for marketing design
- Can you show me 3 school campaigns you designed, and can I call those schools?
- Will you design for the specific channels my agency runs, in the sizes and formats they need?
- What happens to the templates after the project? Can my office use them without you?
- Do you fix the brand first if it needs fixing, or design around it?
- Is the price fixed before you start?
If a designer or agency cannot answer all 5 without hedging, keep looking. Our answers are yes, yes, yours to keep, we fix it first, and yes.
Us, a full-service agency, or both
Three honest cases.
- You have an agency running channels and the creative looks tired. Hire us for the campaign kit. Keep the agency.
- You have nobody running channels and no design. Hire a full-service agency from the comparison and ask whether they want us to supply the brand and creative. Many prefer it.
- Your logo, colors, and materials are the actual problem. Start with us on identity. Do not spend on media until that is done.
Run any of those through the scorecard we published before you sign anything, including with us.
