Thacker Avenue Elementary for International Studies
Location
Kissimmee, Florida (Osceola County School District)
The Challenge
The Problem: Thacker Avenue Elementary for International Studies is a magnet school in Kissimmee that focuses on global learning and cultural awareness. Despite its specialized curriculum, the school lacked a cohesive visual identity that communicated its unique position within the Osceola County School District. Staff-created materials used inconsistent graphics and generic clip art to represent the Wildcats, and there was no official mascot system that captured both the school’s playful elementary spirit and its serious international studies mission. The school’s branding blended into the broader district without standing out to families exploring magnet options.
The Impact: Without a professional Wildcats identity, the school struggled to differentiate itself in the competitive magnet enrollment landscape. Parents comparing programs had no visual cue that Thacker Avenue was anything beyond a typical elementary school. Spirit wear was limited, campus signage lacked personality, and the international studies focus was invisible in the school’s visual presentation.
Our Task
Develop a complete Wildcats brand identity that would:
- Feature a friendly, energetic wildcat character appropriate for elementary-aged children
- Communicate the school’s international studies and global learning mission
- Balance playful mascot appeal with the academic credibility expected of a magnet program
- Work across campus signage, spirit wear, classroom materials, and digital communications
- Create a distinctive presence that stands apart from other Osceola County elementary schools
- Provide vendor-ready files for consistent production across all applications
Strategic Approach
Our research into elementary school branding for specialized magnet programs revealed the importance of creating identities that engage young imaginations while communicating educational purpose to parents and the community. The visual system needed to appear friendly and approachable while clearly signaling the school’s distinctive international curriculum. We studied how families evaluate magnet options and found that a strong visual brand significantly influences enrollment perception.
The wildcat was selected as the ideal mascot because it represents curiosity, adaptability, and energy, which are qualities that align naturally with young learners exploring global cultures. The feline character offers potential for friendly, approachable styling appropriate for elementary children, and its “wild” nature connects metaphorically to the adventure of discovering international perspectives. The color palette of red, black, and white was strategically chosen to create bold, energetic visibility through the dominant red, add sophistication through contrasting black elements, and incorporate white for clarity and balance across all applications.
Design Development
The Wildcats crest centers on a spirited wildcat face designed with expressive features, including prominent whiskers, alert ears, and confident eye markings that engage elementary-aged children without intimidating younger students. The character sits within a circular badge format with “HOME OF THE WILDCATS” messaging curving along the top, reinforcing school pride and belonging. The “THACKER AVENUE” wordmark is boldly positioned below in a banner treatment, with “ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES” as a supporting descriptor that communicates the magnet mission at every touchpoint.
The identity system was deployed across six primary touchpoints:
- Campus signage: Branded crest for building exterior and main entrance identification
- Spirit wear: Red and black t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories featuring the Wildcats crest
- Classroom materials: Branded folders, posters, and educational displays reinforcing the international theme
- Athletics and PE: Equipment, field day materials, and team identification
- Administrative communications: Letterhead, enrollment packets, and parent newsletters
- Digital presence: Website graphics, social media templates, and email headers
Results
The Wildcats identity transformed Thacker Avenue from a school with no visual anchor into one with a cohesive, recognizable brand that clearly communicates its international studies focus. The professional mascot replaced years of inconsistent graphics with a unified character that appears across every student and family touchpoint. The brand now differentiates the school within the district’s magnet offerings, giving prospective families an immediate visual signal of the campus personality. Spirit wear adoption increased as students rallied behind their official Wildcats character, and the campus signage established a welcoming presence that reflects both educational excellence and global citizenship.
