The Challenge
The Problem: Sunrise Elementary School, a public elementary school in Kissimmee dedicated to academic excellence and well-rounded education, needed a vibrant Seastars mascot identity to establish a distinctive campus presence. The school lacked a professional brand system, and existing visual materials were inconsistent across classroom communications, spirit events, and campus signage. Without a unified Seastars identity, the school’s warm, student-centered culture was not reflected in the way families and the community experienced the campus.
The Impact: Without a cohesive, professional brand, Sunrise Elementary struggled to build the visible school pride that drives family engagement and student belonging. Spirit wear was minimal because there was no production-ready mascot artwork for vendors to use. The campus lacked the kind of playful, branded signage that creates a welcoming atmosphere for young learners and their families, and the school had no distinctive visual presence within the Osceola County district.
Our Task
Develop a complete Seastars brand identity system that would:
- Create a friendly, approachable seastar mascot that appeals to elementary-aged children
- Project warmth, positivity, and a love of learning through every visual touchpoint
- Balance playful charm with educational credibility for parent-facing communications
- Work across campus signage, spirit wear, classroom materials, and official documents
- Establish a distinctive presence within the Osceola County district
Strategic Approach
Our research into elementary school branding revealed the importance of creating identities that genuinely engage young children while providing the institutional credibility expected by parents and the community. The visual system needed to appear friendly and approachable while supporting the school’s educational mission. The seastar was selected because it creates an immediate phonetic connection to the “Sunrise” school name, and the star shape naturally suggests achievement, brightness, and aspiration.
The marine creature offers rich visual territory for friendly, approachable styling that appeals directly to young children. The five-point structure provides natural visual stability and recognition, and the character can be rendered with expressive, anthropomorphic features that create immediate emotional connection with elementary students.
The color palette of royal blue, bright gold, and light blue accents was strategically chosen to create a vibrant, energetic presence through the dominant blue background while adding warmth and positivity through the golden seastar character. The complementary blue tones create a nautical feel that reinforces the marine theme, and the bright, optimistic aesthetic is perfectly suited for young learners.
Design Development
The Seastars crest features a friendly, anthropomorphic seastar character centered in a circular badge, designed for immediate connection with young audiences. The expressive features, including eyes, smile, and arms, provide personality and warmth while the simplified, cartoonish treatment balances character appeal with clean graphic forms. The “SUNRISE ELEMENTARY” designation curves along the top of the badge with the bold “SEASTARS” wordmark below.
The system was deployed across five primary touchpoints:
- Campus signage: Exterior and interior identification featuring the Seastars crest for a welcoming atmosphere
- Spirit wear: T-shirts, hoodies, and apparel with the friendly Seastars character for students and families
- Classroom materials: Posters, certificates, reading awards, and educational resources with brand-consistent artwork
- Administrative documents: Letterhead, folders, and official school communications
- Merchandise and accessories: Bags, stickers, water bottles, and everyday student items
Results
The Seastars identity gave Sunrise Elementary a warm, playful visual presence that perfectly matches the school’s student-centered culture. The friendly seastar character became an instant favorite with students, creating a rallying symbol that inspires pride and excitement across the campus. Families responded positively to the professional quality of the spirit wear and merchandise, and the cohesive brand brought a new level of consistency and warmth to campus signage and classroom materials. The Seastars identity established a distinctive, recognizable presence for Sunrise Elementary within the Osceola County district.
