The Challenge

The Problem: Horizon Middle School, a grades 6-8 school in Kissimmee serving the Osceola County community, operated without a cohesive brand identity that matched its forward-thinking educational philosophy. The school’s visual materials were inconsistent, with different versions of logos and graphics appearing on athletic uniforms, campus signage, and digital communications. Staff members pieced together visuals from various sources, creating a fragmented presence that did not reflect the quality of the programs offered to students during these critical developmental years.

The Impact: The lack of a unified identity made it difficult for Horizon to stand out within the competitive Osceola County district landscape. Students had limited opportunities to rally behind a single, recognizable brand, and the school struggled to project the sense of ambition and potential that defined its educational mission. Prospective families touring the campus encountered a visual experience that did not match the school’s academic reputation.

Our Task

Develop a complete Horizon Middle School brand identity system that would:

  1. Create a dynamic crest design symbolizing growth, exploration, and forward momentum
  2. Appeal to the middle school age range while projecting academic seriousness
  3. Deploy consistently across campus signage, spirit wear, and athletics gear
  4. Reflect the school’s philosophy of helping students reach their full potential
  5. Provide vendor-ready files for consistent reproduction across all formats

Strategic Approach

Our research into middle school branding showed that students in grades 6-8 respond to identities that feel ambitious and forward-looking rather than childish. The design needed to project aspiration and energy while still fitting within the educational context of the Osceola County School District. We studied how successful middle school brands create visual momentum that inspires students during this transitional stage of their academic careers.

The color strategy was built around tones that convey confidence and upward trajectory. We selected a palette that would stand out on athletic fields and campus exteriors while remaining refined enough for academic materials and official communications. The crest format was chosen for its ability to anchor both formal documents and high-energy spirit applications.

Design Development

The Horizon crest features a dynamic design built around the concept of forward movement and unlimited potential. The visual elements emphasize upward trajectory and aspiration, creating a mark that resonates with middle school students while maintaining professional polish. The school name is integrated in a clear hierarchy that reads well at both large and small scales.

The identity system was deployed across five primary touchpoints:

  • Campus facade: Exterior-mounted crest providing architectural identification and curb appeal
  • Spirit wear: Hoodies, t-shirts, and outerwear featuring the Horizon crest for student and family wear
  • Athletics gear: Drawstring bags, PE equipment, and sports accessories with brand-consistent artwork
  • Interior wayfinding: Blade signs for corridors, reception areas, and common spaces
  • Academic materials: Branded collateral for administrative and classroom use

Results

The new Horizon identity gave the school a unified visual presence that matched the ambition of its educational mission. The professional crest replaced years of inconsistent graphics with a single, recognizable mark that students and staff rallied behind. Spirit wear adoption increased as families responded to the quality and energy of the new designs. The campus facade signage created immediate recognition and projected investment to the broader Kissimmee community.
