The Challenge

The Problem: Deerwood Elementary School, a STEM-focused public elementary school in Kissimmee, needed a professional identity that reflected the legacy of NASA’s Challenger mission and inspired curiosity among young learners. The school’s Challengers name carried powerful meaning, but the existing visual presence did not capture the ambition, wonder, or science-first spirit that defined the school’s curriculum. Without a cohesive brand system, campus communications, spirit wear, and signage relied on inconsistent artwork that failed to connect students to the school’s distinctive mission.

The Impact: Without a unified Challengers identity built around the space exploration theme, the school missed opportunities to visually reinforce its STEM commitment at every touchpoint. Students lacked a bold, inspiring symbol to rally around, and the campus offered no branded signage that would communicate the school’s unique positioning to visiting families. Spirit wear options were limited, and the absence of professional artwork made it difficult to produce consistent merchandise that families would want to wear and display.

Our Task

Develop a complete Challengers brand identity system that would:

  1. Create a NASA mission-patch-style crest honoring the Challenger legacy
  2. Inspire curiosity and excitement about science and exploration in elementary students
  3. Reinforce the school’s STEM-first curriculum through every visual touchpoint
  4. Work across campus facades, athletics gear, wayfinding signage, and administrative materials
  5. Establish a unique positioning within the Osceola County district’s STEM-focused schools

Strategic Approach

Our research into elementary school branding for institutions with future-focused missions revealed the importance of creating identities that make abstract concepts like achievement and exploration tangible and exciting for young children. The visual system needed to inspire young imaginations while maintaining educational substance and institutional trust.

The space shuttle theme was selected as the central identity concept because the shuttle symbolizes exploration, discovery, and reaching new heights, all perfect metaphors for education. The “Challengers” name creates multiple layers of meaning around embracing challenges and honoring space exploration. The aerospace theme connects naturally to STEM education and future-focused learning, and the distinctive shuttle silhouette creates immediate recognition across all applications.

The color palette of deep burgundy, silver, and black was strategically chosen to create a bold, distinguished presence through the dominant burgundy background. The metallic silver accents add technological sophistication, while the black elements provide depth and cosmic associations. Together these colors project both excitement and educational substance, establishing a distinctive presence that stands apart from other elementary schools in the district.

Design Development

The Challengers crest features a dynamic space shuttle positioned within a circular cosmic backdrop, designed in the style of a NASA mission patch for maximum impact and recognition. The “DEERWOOD ELEMENTARY” designation curves along the sides of the badge, with the bold “CHALLENGERS” wordmark positioned below in a banner treatment. The starfield background establishes cosmic context and visual interest while the circular badge format provides a containing device that suggests mission patches and unity.

The system was deployed across six primary touchpoints:

  • Campus facade: Mounted crest on the brick building exterior for high-visibility identification at the main entry
  • Spirit wear: Burgundy hoodies, t-shirts, and apparel with screen-printed and embroidered Challengers crest
  • Athletics gear: Drawstring PE bags and equipment with the durable, single-color-friendly Challengers mark
  • Interior wayfinding: Mission patch crest on dark panels for corridor and reception navigation
  • Administrative stationery: Branded binders, letterhead, and official school documents
  • Classroom integration: Posters, certificates, and educational materials reinforcing the exploration theme

Results

The Challengers identity gave Deerwood Elementary a future-ready visual presence that directly reinforces its STEM-focused curriculum. The NASA mission-patch-style crest created a powerful symbol that students connect with on an emotional level, making science and exploration feel personal and exciting. The professional brand system brought cohesion to every campus touchpoint, from the building facade to classroom materials. The burgundy and silver palette established a distinctive, sophisticated presence that stands apart within the Osceola County district and signals the school’s unique commitment to STEM education.
