The Challenge
The Problem: Denn John Middle School, serving 944 students in grades 6-8 in Kissimmee, had been relying on a clipart dragon as its mascot for years. The old design featured complex wings and outlines that were nearly impossible to reproduce consistently across different applications. Vendors struggled to print the detailed artwork on helmets, jerseys, and signage, resulting in blurry, inconsistent versions of the dragon appearing throughout the campus. As part of the broader Osceola County School District brand identity update, Denn John recognized the need to upgrade their Dragons identity to a professional standard.
The Impact: The clipart dragon created ongoing production problems that affected every aspect of the school’s visual presence. Athletic uniforms looked inconsistent, campus signage was unreliable, and merchandise quality suffered from the complex, low-resolution source artwork. Students could not rally behind a mascot that looked different on every surface, and the school’s competitive presence within the district was weakened by the unprofessional visual identity.
Our Task
Develop a complete Dragons brand identity system that would:
- Replace the complex clipart dragon with a modern, vendor-ready mascot design
- Create a forward-facing dragon that is bold, edgy, and visually striking
- Establish a red, graphite, and white color palette for strong athletic presence
- Simplify the artwork for reliable reproduction across helmets, uniforms, and signage
- Develop merchandise and branded product concepts for school spirit
- Deliver complete production specifications for all vendor applications
Strategic Approach
Our approach focused on preserving the dragon identity that the Denn John community valued while completely solving the production and quality issues that plagued the old clipart design. We studied how the best dragon mascots in school branding achieve visual impact through simplification rather than complexity, using bold shapes and confident lines that read clearly at every size from helmet decals to building signage.
The red, graphite, and white color palette was selected to create maximum visual impact on athletic fields and in gymnasium environments. Red brings energy and intensity, graphite adds a modern edge, and white provides clean contrast for legibility. The forward-facing dragon head design was engineered for bold presence at stadium distance while maintaining detail and personality at close range. Every element was tested against vendor production requirements to ensure the artwork would reproduce consistently across embroidery, screen printing, vinyl, and digital applications.
Design Development
The Dragons crest features a powerful forward-facing dragon head with an inner shadow treatment designed for stadium-distance legibility. The design replaces the old clipart’s complex wings and outlines with a clean, confident mark that projects edgy intensity while maintaining the personality that students connect with. A bold wordmark accompanies the dragon head, creating a complete crest system for athletic and academic applications.
The identity system was deployed across six primary touchpoints:
- Athletic helmets: Oversized dragon head wrap decal in red, graphite, and white for game day impact
- Spirit wear: Hoodies with embroidered crest, plus printed t-shirts and outerwear
- Campus signage: Exterior blade signs featuring the dragon snout and eye for environmental branding
- Brand guidelines: Approved colorways and background specifications for consistent vendor production
- Merchandise: Branded backpacks, bags, and accessories personalized with the school identity
- Academic materials: Branded collateral for classroom and administrative use
Results
The new Dragons identity eliminated the production problems that had plagued Denn John for years and gave the school a professional mascot that students and staff embraced immediately. The simplified, vendor-ready artwork produced clean, consistent results across every application, from helmet wraps to embroidered hoodies. The branded merchandise concepts showed the school how a small investment in consistent branding could create major visual impact. The red, graphite, and white palette positioned Denn John as a bold competitor within the Osceola County School District.
