The Challenge
The Problem: Narcoossee Elementary School, a PK-5 public school in St. Cloud serving over 1,000 students, had an existing bear cub logo that was not a unique design and could not be protected by trademark. The generic artwork made it difficult to distinguish Narcoossee from other schools using similar bear imagery. Teachers and staff lacked professional-quality brand assets for classroom materials, spirit events, and campus communications, resulting in a fragmented visual presence across the school community.
The Impact: Without a distinctive, ownable Bears identity, the school struggled to build the kind of visible pride that strengthens student belonging and parent engagement. The generic logo could not be reproduced consistently across embroidered apparel, printed materials, and signage. Spirit wear options were limited because the existing artwork was not production-ready, and the campus lacked branded identification that would communicate pride and investment to visiting families.
Our Task
Develop a complete Bears brand identity system that would:
- Create a unique, trademark-worthy bear mascot that replaces the generic existing logo
- Appeal to the full PK-5 age range with a friendly yet distinctive character
- Provide embroidery-optimized designs for consistent reproduction on apparel and gear
- Work across campus signage, classroom materials, spirit wear, and official documents
- Establish a brand presence that stands apart within the Osceola County district
- Deliver vendor-ready source files for consistent production across all applications
Strategic Approach
Our research into elementary school branding revealed that the most effective mascots for younger students balance warmth and approachability with enough character to feel distinctive and ownable. The bear mascot needed to feel friendly enough for PreK children while carrying enough personality to inspire pride in older elementary students. The goal was to create a character that was clearly unique to Narcoossee and could not be confused with generic bear clip art.
The bear cub was retained as the mascot because of its strong existing connection to the school community, but the character was completely redesigned to be original, expressive, and brand-ready. The circular badge format was selected for its versatility across both formal applications like letterhead and documents and spirited contexts like apparel and banners.
The color palette was chosen to create bold visibility on campus signage while maintaining warmth in classroom and administrative applications. The embroidery-optimized design ensures clean reproduction at small scale on hats, polos, and patches without losing detail or character.
Design Development
The Bears crest features a friendly, expressive bear cub within a circular badge format, designed for maximum recognition at both large scale (building signage, murals) and small scale (embroidery, document headers). The crest includes the school name and Bears designation in a clear hierarchy that works across every application.
The system was deployed across five primary touchpoints:
- Campus identification: Exterior signage and entry markers for community-facing recognition
- Spirit wear: T-shirts, hoodies, and apparel featuring the Bears crest in multiple colorways
- Classroom materials: Posters, certificates, and educational resources with brand-consistent artwork
- Stationery and documents: Branded letterhead, folders, and official school communications
- Merchandise and accessories: Bags, patches, and accessories with the embroidery-optimized mark
Results
The Bears identity gave Narcoossee Elementary a distinctive, trademark-worthy visual presence for the first time. The professional brand system replaced the generic bear clip art with a unique character that the school community could truly call their own. The embroidery-optimized designs enabled a wide range of spirit wear production, and families responded positively to the professional quality of the merchandise. The cohesive identity strengthened school pride and gave Narcoossee a recognizable presence within the Osceola County district.
