The Challenge
The Problem: Hickory Tree Elementary, a PreK-5 school in St. Cloud known for its personalized learning approach and close-knit community culture, lacked a professional mascot identity. The school had no official Hawks brand system, which meant inconsistent visuals across campus communications, spirit wear, and signage. Teachers and staff created their own versions of hawk imagery from clip art and free resources, resulting in a fragmented visual presence that did not reflect the quality of the educational experience inside the building.
The Impact: Without a unified identity, the school struggled to build the kind of visible pride that strengthens student belonging and community connection. Spirit wear was minimal because there was no professional artwork for vendors to produce. The campus exterior offered no branded identification that would signal pride and investment to visiting families.
Our Task
Develop a complete Hawks brand identity system that would:
- Create a professional Hawks mascot that resonates with PreK-5 students
- Work across campus signage, spirit wear, athletics gear, and administrative materials
- Reflect the school’s warm, community-centered culture
- Provide vendor-ready files for consistent production across all applications
- Strengthen school pride and visual identification within the Osceola County district
Strategic Approach
Our research into elementary school branding revealed that the most effective mascots for younger students balance energy and excitement with approachability. The hawk character needed to feel strong enough to inspire pride in older elementary students while remaining friendly enough for PreK children.
The color palette was chosen to create bold visibility on campus signage while maintaining warmth in classroom and administrative applications. The crest format was selected for its versatility across both formal (letterhead, documents) and spirited (apparel, banners) contexts.
Design Development
The Hawks crest features a confident hawk head within a circular badge format, designed for maximum recognition at both large scale (building facades) and small scale (embroidery, document headers). The crest includes the school name and Hawks designation in a clear hierarchy that works across every application.
The system was deployed across five primary touchpoints:
- Campus facade: Mounted crest on the building exterior for community-facing identification
- Spirit wear: Hoodies, t-shirts, and apparel featuring the Hawks crest
- Athletics gear: Drawstring bags, water bottles, and PE equipment with brand-consistent artwork
- Interior wayfinding: Blade signs on dark panels for hallway and reception identification
- Administrative materials: Branded binders, letterhead, and official documents
Results
The Hawks identity gave Hickory Tree a cohesive visual presence for the first time. The professional brand system replaced years of inconsistent clip art with a unified identity that appears across every student and family touchpoint. Spirit wear adoption increased as families responded to the professional quality of the merchandise designs. The campus facade signage created immediate curb appeal and community recognition.
