The Challenge

The Problem: Kissimmee Elementary School, a PK-5 public school in Kissimmee serving over 600 students in a diverse community, needed a modernized mascot identity to boost school spirit and strengthen community engagement. The existing Bears branding lacked the professional quality and consistency needed to unify campus communications, spirit wear, and signage. Without a cohesive visual system, the school’s identity felt outdated and did not reflect the energy and diversity of its student body.

The Impact: The absence of a modern, professional brand made it difficult to generate excitement around school events and extracurricular activities. Spirit wear options were limited and inconsistent, and the campus lacked visible branded elements that would signal pride and community investment. In a diverse community where families come from many backgrounds, a strong shared identity was especially important for building belonging and connection.

Our Task

Develop a complete Bears brand identity system that would:

  1. Modernize the Bears mascot to resonate with PK-5 students in a diverse community
  2. Reflect the school’s values of strength, courage, and friendliness
  3. Work across uniforms, spirit wear, school merchandise, and digital platforms
  4. Maintain continuity with the school’s blue and red color tradition
  5. Strengthen community engagement and school pride across all family touchpoints
  6. Provide vendor-ready files for consistent production across all applications

Strategic Approach

Our research into elementary school branding in diverse communities revealed the importance of creating mascot characters that feel universally welcoming and inclusive while projecting enough energy to inspire school-wide pride. The bear cub character needed to balance playfulness and approachability for younger students with enough personality to engage older elementary students and their families.

The bear cub wearing a baseball cap was developed to add a playful, approachable feel that nods to the school’s active participation in sports and community activities. The cap detail gives the character a youthful, relatable personality that students can connect with on a personal level. The circular badge format provides structure and versatility for both formal and spirited applications.

The blue and red color palette was chosen to maintain continuity with the school’s established colors, ensuring recognition and familiarity within the community while delivering a fresh, modernized presentation. The bold contrast between blue and red creates high visibility across signage, apparel, and printed materials.

Design Development

The Bears crest features a friendly bear cub character within a circular badge format, designed for maximum recognition at both large scale (campus signage, gymnasium walls) and small scale (embroidery, document headers). The playful cap detail and expressive face create immediate connection with young students while the professional crest format maintains credibility for parent-facing communications.

The system was deployed across six primary touchpoints:

  • School uniforms: Sports and academic uniforms featuring the updated Bears mascot
  • Spirit wear: Hoodies, t-shirts, and apparel with brand-consistent crest artwork
  • School merchandise: Bags, notebooks, water bottles, and everyday student items
  • Campus signage: Interior and exterior identification for community-facing visibility
  • Digital presence: Website, social media, and digital communications with unified branding
  • Administrative materials: Letterhead, folders, and official school documents

Results

The modernized Bears identity transformed Kissimmee Elementary’s visual presence across the entire school community. Participation at school events and extracurricular activities increased noticeably as the new brand generated excitement and pride. Families responded positively to the professional quality of the spirit wear and merchandise, and the cohesive identity strengthened the sense of belonging across the school’s diverse community. The unified branding gave Kissimmee Elementary a fresh, recognizable presence within the Osceola County district.
