The Challenge

The Problem: Highlands Elementary, a community-focused school in Kissimmee, lacked a professional Cowboys brand identity. The school had a Western heritage theme but no official mascot system that translated it into consistent, professional applications. Staff and parents created their own cowboy graphics for events and materials, resulting in a fragmented visual identity that varied wildly in quality and style.

The Impact: Without a cohesive Cowboys brand, the school could not build the visible pride that drives community engagement. Spirit wear was limited because vendors had no approved artwork. The campus exterior did not communicate the school’s personality or identity to families passing by.

Our Task

Develop a complete Cowboys brand identity that would:

  1. Feature a friendly, approachable cowboy character appropriate for elementary-aged children
  2. Honor the Western heritage theme while maintaining educational professionalism
  3. Work across campus signage, spirit wear, wayfinding, and administrative materials
  4. Create a distinctive identity within the Osceola County School District
  5. Provide vendor-ready files for immediate production across all applications

Strategic Approach

Elementary school mascots must balance two audiences: students who need the character to feel fun and engaging, and parents who need it to feel professional and trustworthy. Our research showed that human-character mascots like cowboys work best when designed with friendly facial expressions, rounded features, and warm body language that younger children respond to positively.

The navy blue and gold color palette was strategically selected to create bold visibility on building signage while evoking the classic American frontier spirit. These colors stand apart from other elementary schools in the district, giving Highlands immediate visual distinction in any side-by-side comparison.

Design Development

The Cowboys crest centers on a smiling cowboy character wearing a classic Western hat, designed with soft, approachable characteristics that engage elementary-aged children without intimidating younger PreK students. The character sits within a circular badge format with “HOME OF THE COWBOYS” messaging that reinforces belonging and pride.

The identity system was deployed across six primary touchpoints:

  • Campus facade: Branded crest mounted on the building exterior for community-facing identification
  • Spirit wear: Navy hoodies, t-shirts, and accessories featuring the Cowboys crest
  • Athletics gear: Drawstring bags, PE equipment, and field day materials
  • Interior wayfinding: Blade signs on dark panels for hallway and reception navigation
  • Administrative materials: Branded binders, letterhead, and school documents
  • Community outreach: Event banners, flyers, and digital templates

Typography was carefully selected to balance the Western theme with educational professionalism, ensuring the brand works across classroom materials and parent communications with equal effectiveness.

Results

The Cowboys identity transformed Highlands Elementary from a school without a visual anchor into one with a cohesive, recognizable brand. The professional mascot replaced years of inconsistent cowboy clip art with a unified character that appears across every student and family touchpoint. Spirit wear adoption grew as families responded to the quality of the merchandise designs. The campus facade signage gave the school a visible personality that communicates warmth and community pride to every family who drives past.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why a cowboy character instead of an animal mascot? The cowboy connects directly to Highlands’ Western heritage theme and creates a unique identity that no other school in the district shares. Human-character mascots also offer more flexibility for poses, expressions, and storytelling across different applications.

How does the design appeal to very young children? The cowboy features a warm smile, rounded proportions, and friendly body language specifically calibrated for PreK-5 audiences. The character feels more like a welcoming friend than an authority figure.

Can this system grow with the school? Yes. The crest format, standalone character, and wordmark variations provide the building blocks for future applications including digital media, environmental graphics, and expanded merchandise lines without requiring a redesign.
