The Challenge

The Problem: Chadron State College has carried the Eagles name since 1911, making it one of the longest-running mascot traditions in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. However, the logo had not kept pace with the times. The outdated eagle design looked generic and failed to command presence against RMAC rivals such as Colorado Mines, New Mexico Highlands, and Adams State. Prospective student-athletes visiting the campus or browsing online encountered branding that did not reflect the competitiveness of a Division II program. The logo reproduced poorly on digital platforms and modern merchandise, and the athletic department lacked a cohesive system that unified all sports under one strong visual identity.

The Impact: The tired branding undermined recruiting efforts and failed to generate the merchandise revenue or school pride that peer institutions enjoyed. Alumni felt disconnected from a logo that no longer represented the program’s ambitions, and the athletics website lacked the visual punch needed to compete for attention online.

Our Task

Create a fierce Eagles athletic identity that would:

  1. Honor over 100 years of eagle tradition dating back to 1911
  2. Compete visually with the top brands in the RMAC
  3. Incorporate a “C” monogram for quick, compact recognition on helmets and caps
  4. Project the strength and intensity appropriate for NCAA Division II athletics
  5. Deliver a complete digital athletics system including website integration and social media templates

Strategic Approach

Chadron State approached us after seeing our Simpson University Hawks redesign, seeking a similarly fierce and modern eagle identity for their program. Our research into the RMAC visual landscape confirmed that Chadron had significant room to elevate its brand presence. We studied how the most successful Division II programs balance tradition with modernity and found that the key is honoring heritage through color and symbolism while delivering the sharp, contemporary execution that today’s student-athletes expect.

The eagle was retained as the mascot because of its deep roots in the school’s 100-plus-year history, but the visual treatment was completely reimagined. We chose a forward-facing eagle head to project confrontation and confidence, departing from the passive profile views of the past. The maroon, black, white, and grey color system preserves the college’s traditional palette while introducing refined contrast ratios that ensure legibility across digital screens, embroidered fabrics, and printed signage. The integration of the eagle head within a bold “C” monogram created a compact, instantly recognizable mark that works at every scale.

Design Development

The Eagles crest features a powerful forward-facing eagle head rendered in detailed black, grey, and white planes, encircled by a bold maroon “C” monogram. The primary athletic mark positions the eagle within a structured crest format with the classic “CHADRON STATE COLLEGE” wordmark arching above and a bold “EAGLES” banner below, creating a composition that commands respect on gymnasium walls and printed programs alike.

The identity system was deployed across six primary touchpoints:

  • Athletic uniforms: Primary crest and standalone monogram for jerseys, helmets, and caps across all sports
  • Campus signage: Large-format Eagles mark for stadium entrances, athletic facilities, and building identification
  • Digital athletics: Website hero sections, schedule graphics, and social media templates featuring the maroon brand system
  • Recruiting materials: Bold Eagles branding on prospective student-athlete packets and presentation decks
  • Merchandise: Performance apparel, headwear, and accessories for students, athletes, and alumni
  • Media backdrops: Press conference and event backgrounds featuring the primary crest and wordmark

Results

The Eagles rebrand positioned Chadron State as a serious Division II competitor with a visual identity that matches its athletic ambitions. The athletic department gave the design a standing ovation at the initial presentation, and adoption was immediate across all sports programs. The brand now competes visually with the conference’s top programs, and the athletics website saw a significant increase in user engagement following the rollout. Merchandise revenue grew dramatically in the first year as students, athletes, and alumni embraced the new Eagles gear. Most importantly, the updated identity reinvigorated institutional pride and gave the recruiting team a powerful visual tool for attracting the next generation of Chadron State student-athletes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why update a logo with over 100 years of tradition? Tradition lives in the name, colors, and spirit of the program, not in an outdated graphic. The new Eagles mark preserves everything meaningful about Chadron’s heritage while delivering the sharp, modern execution that recruits, fans, and media expect from a competitive Division II program.

How does the “C” monogram improve the brand? The monogram provides a compact, instantly recognizable mark that works at small scales on helmets, caps, and sleeve patches where the full crest would lose detail. It also gives the brand a secondary identity element that reinforces recognition across all touchpoints.

Can this system scale for future athletic expansion? Yes. The crest format, standalone monogram, and wordmark variations provide a flexible foundation for adding new sports, updating digital platforms, or expanding merchandise lines without requiring a full redesign.
