The Problem: Discovery Intermediate School in Kissimmee, an intermediate school emphasizing inquiry-based learning and STEM education, lacked a professional mascot identity that reflected its mission of scientific exploration and discovery. The school had no unified brand system connecting its commitment to STEM with its campus presence, and communications relied on generic or inconsistent visuals. Without a distinctive identity, the school’s innovative curriculum and inquiry-based approach were not reflected in the way students, families, and the community experienced the campus.

The Impact: Without a cohesive space exploration identity, the school struggled to visually communicate what makes Discovery Intermediate unique within the Osceola County district. Students lacked a rallying symbol that connected classroom learning to a larger sense of purpose and adventure. The campus offered no branded signage or spirit wear that would signal the school’s STEM-first mission to visiting families and prospective students, making it harder to build pride and excitement around the school’s distinctive educational approach.

Our Task

Develop a complete Astronaut brand identity system that would:

  1. Create a professional astronaut mascot that embodies exploration and scientific curiosity
  2. Reinforce the school’s STEM commitment through every visual touchpoint

  4. Work across campus signage, spirit wear, classroom materials, and digital platforms

Strategic Approach

Our research into STEM-focused educational branding revealed the importance of creating identities that make scientific exploration feel exciting and accessible while maintaining educational credibility. The visual system needed to capture students’ imaginations during a pivotal age when many young learners either embrace or disengage from scientific subjects. The astronaut mascot was selected because astronauts symbolize exploration, discovery, and the frontiers of human achievement, creating immediate connections to scientific inquiry and technological innovation.

The space theme directly reinforces the “Discovery” school name, and the human element inside the spacesuit makes advanced science relatable and aspirational for intermediate-grade students. The distinctive astronaut silhouette creates strong recognition across various applications, from large-format campus signage to small embroidered patches.

The color palette of deep cosmic blue, vibrant light blue, and silver was strategically chosen to project the vastness and wonder of space exploration. The contrasting blue tones create high visibility and impact, while the silver accents establish an aesthetic that feels both scientific and exciting. These colors generate immediate associations with space and technology, appealing to intermediate-aged students while maintaining educational credibility.

Design Development

The Astronaut crest features a front-facing spacesuit figure within a circular starfield and portal frame, designed for maximum recognition and engagement. The bold “DISCOVERY” wordmark with blue “INTERMEDIATE” banner creates a clear hierarchy. The circular framing device references spacecraft viewing portals and planet shapes, reinforcing the space exploration theme at every level.

The system was deployed across five primary touchpoints:

  • Campus signage: Exterior and interior identification featuring the mission-patch-style crest
  • Spirit wear: T-shirts, hoodies, and apparel with the Astronaut crest and STEM-themed graphics
  • Classroom integration: Posters, certificates, and educational materials reinforcing the discovery theme
  • Digital platforms: Website headers, social media profiles, and digital communications
  • Administrative materials: Letterhead, folders, and official school documents with brand-consistent artwork
