The Challenge
The Problem: Avon Grove School District (AGSD) is a K-12 public school system serving over 5,000 students across four campuses: Penn London Elementary (K-2), Avon Grove Intermediate School (3-6), Fred S. Engle Middle School (7-8), and Avon Grove High School (9-12). The district was in the middle of a major brand development initiative tied to new facilities construction and an updated vision and mission. However, each school had developed its own visual materials independently over the years, resulting in a fragmented identity with no consistent Red Devils brand across the four campuses. Vendors, coaches, and administrators used different versions of the mascot, and there was no unified design language connecting the elementary experience to the high school.
The Impact: The inconsistent branding diluted district recognition throughout Chester County. Parents moving children between schools encountered different visual identities at each campus. Merchandise programs operated in isolation, and the district’s significant investment in new facilities deserved a visual identity that matched its forward-looking ambitions.
Our Task
Develop a comprehensive Red Devils brand architecture that would:
- Unify all four campuses under a single, cohesive visual identity system
- Create a primary Red Devils mascot logo and supporting brand marks
- Develop a secondary “AG” monogram incorporating the trident and devil-tail design elements
- Provide age-appropriate variations from elementary through high school
- Deliver complete brand guidelines, stationery, and merchandise specifications
- Support the district’s new facilities and strategic vision with a professional visual language
Strategic Approach
Our research into multi-school district branding revealed that the most successful systems create a strong central identity with flexible variations that allow each campus to feel connected without losing its individual character. Avon Grove’s four-campus structure required a brand architecture that could scale from PreK classroom materials to varsity athletic jerseys while maintaining visual consistency throughout. We studied how families experience a district over a student’s thirteen-year journey and designed the system to create continuity at every transition point.
The Red Devils mascot was reimagined with a bold, contemporary treatment that honors the district’s tradition while projecting the energy and ambition of the new facilities era. The secondary “AG” monogram was crafted with a trident and tail integrated into the letterforms, giving the district a compact identity mark that reinforces the Red Devils theme without requiring the full mascot illustration. The color palette and typography were standardized across all four campuses to eliminate the visual inconsistencies that had accumulated over the years.
Design Development
The Red Devils identity centers on a dynamic mascot character rendered with aggressive styling appropriate for high school athletics and a clean graphic structure that adapts to younger audiences at the elementary and intermediate levels. The primary logo pairs the mascot with bold district typography, while the “AG” monogram provides a versatile secondary mark with the trident and devil-tail elements subtly woven into the letterforms. A text-only “Red Devils” wordmark rounds out the system for applications where graphic complexity needs to be minimized.
