Narcoossee Middle School, located in St. Cloud, Florida, is a well-established educational institution with a focus on preparing students for high school success. Founded in 2009, the school has built a strong reputation within the Osceola County School District for its academic rigor, student development programs, and commitment to creating a supportive transition between elementary and high school education.

The school approached our agency to develop a powerful, distinctive brand identity centered around a Black Bears mascot that would resonate with middle school students while projecting strength, determination, and community pride. The identity needed to appeal to the adolescent demographic while establishing a respected presence that would foster school spirit and unity.

Through strategic consultation with school administration, athletic directors, faculty representatives, and student leadership, we established the following objectives for the Narcoossee Middle School Black Bears brand identity:

  • Create a bold, commanding black bear mascot that embodies strength, resilience, and determination
  • Develop a contemporary visual identity system that appeals directly to the middle school demographic
  • Design a versatile brand that functions effectively across academic, athletic, and community contexts
  • Establish a distinctive green, black, and silver color palette that creates immediate recognition
  • Build a cohesive identity that fosters school pride and community connection
  • Create a system that balances competitive spirit with educational values

Strategic Approach

Our research into middle school branding revealed the importance of creating identities that respect the developmental stage of adolescent students—sophisticated enough to avoid appearing childish while maintaining appropriate gravitas and school pride. The visual system needed to project strength and confidence while supporting the school’s educational mission.

The black bear was selected as the ideal mascot for several strategic reasons:

  • Bears symbolize strength, resilience, and determination – qualities that resonate with adolescent development
  • The powerful animal provides natural connections to both athletic prowess and determined character
  • The local wildlife connection creates regional relevance and community connection
  • The mascot offers rich visual territory for both intimidating athletic applications and more dignified academic contexts
  • The distinctive silhouette creates strong recognition across various applications

The color palette of deep forest green, black, and silver was strategically chosen to:

  • Create a bold, distinguished presence through the dominant green background
  • Add strength and power through the prominent black elements
  • Incorporate silver for sophistication and premium positioning
  • Establish a distinctive presence that stands apart from other schools in the district
  • Project maturity and confidence appropriate for middle school students

Design Development

Mascot Creation

The Black Bears mascot was developed with careful attention to both imposing presence and brand versatility:

  • The forward-facing bear head creates immediate engagement and strength
  • The stylized treatment balances realism with clean graphic forms
  • The stern expression communicates determination and focus
  • The simplified forms ensure clarity across various applications
  • The integration within a shield framework references protection and achievement

The final design features a powerful black bear head centered in a shield-shaped framework, with the “BLACK BEARS” wordmark boldly positioned across the top in a dominant arc. The “NARCOOSSEE MIDDLE” designation anchors the upper portion of the composition, with “EST. 2009” markers adding institutional credibility, creating a balanced hierarchy with strong visual impact and immediate recognition.
