Project: Koala Mascot & STEAM-Focused Brand Identity
School Type: Elementary School
School District: Osceola County School District
Koa Elementary School, located in Kissimmee, Florida, is a new and innovative educational institution focused on STEAM-based education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and student success. As a recent addition to the Osceola County School District, Koa Elementary represents a forward-thinking approach to elementary education, blending rigorous academic foundations with creative exploration and technological fluency.
The school approached our agency to develop a distinctive brand identity centered around a koala mascot that would appeal to young learners while communicating the school’s commitment to innovation and academic excellence. As a new institution, Koa Elementary needed an identity that would immediately establish recognition while setting the foundation for a lasting legacy of educational achievement.
Through strategic planning sessions with the founding administration team, inaugural faculty members, and district representatives, we established the following objectives for the Koa Elementary School brand identity:
- Create a friendly, engaging koala mascot that connects with the school name while appealing to young learners
- Develop a distinctive visual identity system that reflects both innovation and educational fundamentals
- Design a versatile brand that functions effectively across STEAM-focused educational contexts
- Establish a warm, natural color palette that creates immediate recognition while projecting warmth
- Build a cohesive identity that fosters school pride from the institution’s founding
- Create a system that communicates both nurturing support and academic exploration
Strategic Approach
Our research into elementary education branding, particularly for STEAM-focused institutions, revealed the importance of creating identities that balance approachability with educational credibility. The visual system needed to engage young imaginations while reassuring parents and the community of the school’s academic foundations.
The koala was selected as the ideal mascot for several strategic reasons:
- The natural wordplay between “Koa” and “koala” creates immediate name recognition
- Koalas project a friendly, approachable character that naturally appeals to young children
- The animal’s natural curiosity and climbing abilities metaphorically represent exploration and achievement
- The distinctive appearance creates a memorable visual identifier that stands apart from typical mascots
- The Australian marsupial offers rich educational territory for global learning and environmental themes
The color palette of forest green, warm beige, and rich brown was strategically chosen to:
- Project a natural, organic aesthetic that connects to environmental elements of STEAM education
- Create a warm, nurturing impression that feels welcoming to young learners
- Establish a distinctive presence that stands apart from more primary-colored elementary identities
- Balance educational seriousness with approachable warmth
- Provide sufficient contrast for strong visibility across applications
Design Development
Mascot Creation
The Koala mascot was developed with careful attention to both child appeal and brand versatility:
- The friendly koala face creates immediate engagement with young audiences
- The simplified treatment balances character with clean graphic forms
- The circular framing device provides a natural container for the mascot
- The distinctive ears extend slightly beyond the circle, adding visual interest
- The warm expression communicates both friendliness and curiosity
The final design features a welcoming koala centered in a circular badge with the “HOME OF THE KOALAS” designation curving along the top. The “KOA ELEMENTARY” wordmark is boldly positioned below in a banner treatment, creating a balanced composition with strong visual hierarchy and immediate recognition.
