Client: Richard T. McReavy Elementary
Location: Waller, Texas
Project: Mustang Mascot & Brand Identity System

Richard T. McReavy Elementary School serves the Waller community in southeast Texas, providing comprehensive education for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. As part of the Waller Independent School District, McReavy Elementary has established itself as a student-centered institution dedicated to building strong educational foundations in a supportive, engaging environment.

Named after a respected local educator and community leader, the school carries a legacy of educational excellence and community connection. As Waller continued to experience growth and demographic changes, school leadership recognized the need for a cohesive visual identity that would unify the school community while honoring both local heritage and educational mission.

Through collaborative discussions with school administration, faculty, and parent representatives, we established several key objectives for the branding initiative:

  • Create a distinctive Mustang mascot that resonates with elementary students while maintaining appropriate sophistication
  • Develop a comprehensive visual identity system that builds recognition and pride
  • Establish consistent application of the school’s full name (Richard T. McReavy Elementary)
  • Design brand expressions that work effectively across educational and community contexts
  • Build a visual language that distinguishes McReavy within the Waller Independent School District
  • Create a system versatile enough to serve various age groups within the K-5 environment

Strategic Approach

Our research phase included immersion in the Waller community, examination of Texas educational branding trends, and exploration of effective elementary mascot applications. Several key insights emerged that guided our design approach:

  1. The mustang carries significant cultural resonance in Texas, connecting to regional heritage and natural landscape—providing an authentic foundation for the school identity.
  2. Elementary mascots must balance approachability with aspiration; students need a symbol that is both friendly and admirable, avoiding intimidating characteristics while still conveying positive attributes.
  3. The most effective elementary identities incorporate subtle educational symbolism while maintaining visual appeal and recognition for young students.
  4. Community connection matters significantly in Waller, where schools serve as important focal points for community identity and pride.
  5. Color distinction within the district would be crucial for building McReavy’s unique presence, requiring a palette that stands out while maintaining professional educational appearance.

These insights led us to develop a mustang identity that balances regional character with educational values—creating a symbol that feels authentically Texan while embodying the qualities McReavy seeks to instill in its students.

Design Development

Mascot Creation

The McReavy Mustang features several deliberate design elements:

  • Horse Portrait: A forward-facing mustang head provides immediate recognition while allowing for appropriate detail and character.
  • Expression: The mustang’s expression conveys alertness and dignity without appearing aggressive, creating a symbol that embodies positive attributes like intelligence and determination.
  • Simplified Detail: The design balances adequate detail for recognition with simplified forms that work across various applications and age groups.
  • Oval Framing: The mustang is contained within an oval format that creates structured presentation while referencing traditional school identity conventions.
  • Color System: The navy blue, orange, and silver/gray palette creates distinctive presence within the district while offering flexibility across applications. The orange provides energy and distinctiveness, navy adds institutional credibility, and silver adds sophistication and dimension.

Typography & Structure

The identity system features a hierarchical typographic approach:

  • “McREAVY” appears as the dominant nameplate in a strong, collegiate-style font with dimensional treatment, creating immediate recognition
  • “RICHARD T.” maintains appropriate prominence to honor the school’s namesake
  • “ELEMENTARY” grounds the identity in its educational context
  • The structured framework creates clear organization while ensuring the full school name is consistently presented

This structured approach ensures that the full “Richard T. McReavy Elementary” name receives proper treatment while still providing practical applications for various contexts and scales.

Elementary-Specific Design Considerations

Several specialized considerations guided our design decisions:

Age-Appropriate Scaling The system was designed to adjust presentation based on student age, with slightly more approachable applications for K-2 and more dynamic expressions for grades 3-5.

Recognition Factors All elements were tested for immediate recognition by young students, ensuring the mascot reads clearly even to early readers.

Texas Educational Context The design acknowledges Texas educational traditions while creating distinctive presence for McReavy within those conventions.

Pronunciation Guidance Considering the unique spelling of “McReavy,” supporting materials include subtle pronunciation guidance where appropriate.

Practical Application Constraints The system acknowledges the practical realities of school environments, with designs that work effectively across physical applications while remaining economical to implement.

The resulting identity system provides Richard T. McReavy Elementary with a distinctive visual presence that builds school recognition and pride while honoring both Texas heritage and educational values. The mustang serves as both a memorable mascot and a meaningful symbol of the strength, freedom, and determination the school seeks to instill in its students.
